the said Descased was found in a Hayloft on the plantation of S G McClanhan[?] in Greenville Dist, & when ordered to surrender by the said Patterson, refused, & persisted in efforts to make his escape until shot & killed

Patterson states that he could not tell whether the deceased was armed or not he refused to halt & pressed direct on him

S G McClanhan[?] ... states te desceased Joe was about his premises, that he had informed Patterson & Watson of the fact & that a reward was offered for him that he was a boy of bad character that was[?] armed, & that he had put [??] then guard against the desceased that he had owned the desceased, & that he had proved so refractory, rebellious he was compelled to kill him
