the boy Henry was in a cotton patch where his Jos children were at work. Jo heard the children crying & went to the cotton patch & asked Henry what was the matter or[?] what he had been whipping the children for. Henry said they had distroyed his water melon. Henry told Jo he would whip him. Jr. got over the fence, Henry open[?] his knife & made at him Jo, he Jo [?] back several steps towards the fence. Henry still making at him with his knife open. Jo to protect himself picked up a hoe & struck him twice with the hoe, on the left side of the head. [?] the 2nd lick he fell.
