Testimony taken at Inquest. Joe Durham sworm says: I was at Bethel Church attending prayer meeting last night about 11 'clock. After the meeting broke I walked out to the road in front of the church on my way home - there was a crowd in the road. I heard the deceased say to Gilchrist come go down the road with me and I will settle with you - said no I wont go, this is my road. Nelson Davis the deceased said, if you wont go my road, I will go with you. William Gilchrist started off then in the direction of his home, and deceased turned back then and followed Gilchrist, caught up with him and they went off quarelling. Witness said to Coleman less go and stop that fuss. We went on and a short distance from the churc hwe saw they had stopped. Just before we got to them, I heard Will Gilchrist say dont call me a son of a bitch again. I walked up and said men dont have any fuss, and put my hand out between them. Nelson (deceased) was on my left and Will on my right, with his right hand behind him on his hip. The deceased repeated the words son of a bitch, at the struck at Will with a stick, hitting me on the right hand, and just then the pistol fired twice, one report just after the other, and Nelson Davis fell on his back to the ground and said Lord have mercy, and in a moment said turn me over. He was turned over and died in a few minutes. Will Gilchrist then walked off, There was five men present when the deceased was killed. This happened on the night of the 6th of April 1893.
