Mr. Bratton I recognize the body as being that of Mr. Barker or as I was told George Barker, Dr. McMaster Mr Buchanan and myself were standing in the post office [?] we heard cussing in a loud angry tone, and, Dr. McMaster and Mr Buchanan started immediately and I followed them where we got[?] in fifteen paces up a [?] shop where dancing was going on between negroes we passed a man whom I recognized afterwards to be the person who was Killed. Barker was cussing very violently saying that he had lost his pockety book and would die before he would leave. Presently the [?] and I saw Richard McMaster come to the door with a hat in his hand. He then cursed Richard McMaster and then I heard Richard McMaster ask him if he wanted to fight him, he replied in tones of defiance, Dr. McMaster then went towards Barker with his Barker's hat in his hand and tried to put it on his head or did do it Then I saw two men close I thought it was Richard McMaster and Barker, A very confused scene then followed, and after the two men parted I heard as I thought three pistol shots, but don't Know by whom the pistol was fired, then there was a dead silence, after which I saw a man run off. I then recognized [?] voices those of Dr. McMaster and Richard McMaster [?] pursue him, that he had Killed some body. But they hurried[?] into the Piazas[?] and so did I after them into the [Piazas of the Post office]crossed out] as they said and as I [?] to get a pistol. I overtook Richard McMaster in the main Piazar[?] of the house when he handed to me the pistol I see in the table before you. I did not see any weapon in the hand of either party. I know that Mr McMaster received a wound in the affair about an inch long. I saw the belt taken from his Barker's body and I recognize this Knife as his[?] that of Barker[crossed out] I saw last night. I heard Richard McMaster say that I am afraid I have Killed or shot that man. He also said that he was [?] Alex [?] I had gone to my room when I heard Mr Barker cursing when I heard him say that he would loose the last drop of his lifes blood before this woman should receive a lick. Richard Mcmaster then came to the door and handed someone his hat saying that he must put off[?] he continued cursing whereupon Richard Mcmaster went to him and asked him if he wanted to fight him, when Barker said to him pitch in[?] by that time D Mcmaster come up with his hat and gave it to him saying you must put off . They tried to persuade him to leave, but the next thing I heard were blows but I dont Know from whom they came. In the struggle I heard Richard Mcmaster say to his Brother Riley I am cut and shortly after that I head a pistol fire, and the man with them as I took it to be ran off Dr Mcmaster, Richard Mcmaster after him, but saw no more of them. I heard two reports of the pistol at least one immediately after the others. [two doctors testimonies saying they don't know much], [R. J. McMasters Testimony almost verbatim except a description of the negro dance where fight occurred: "I saw my brother Richard there and told him to Keep under[?]. He said that he would Keep the drunken white men out."], [nothing of note in Thomas Barker or John Barkers testimony... background on who owned the pistol/knife/belt], The testimony of Mark Murry, Barker came out of the house where the negro frolick was and said that he had lost his pocket book when D Mcmaster came out and held a lay[?] argument with him. Dr Mcmaster told him to clear out of his yard or he would whip him, Barker Kept retreating back when D Mcmaster went up toward him and [?] and his Brother and some one else. Immediately after which I saw a man called Barker raise his arm as if he were going to strike with a weapon. to disable him I struck at his arm with the stick before you on table. when I heard a pistol fire at least three shots. I then saw Barker striking at Dr Mcmaster. I started towards him, when I heard Richard Mcmaster exclaim, he is got a Knife take care, Shortly afterwards I heard Richard Mcmaster exclaim he had Killed Riley, and Riley said he had Killed Dick. After him[?] [At this point there is a piece of paper covering up a bunch of scratched out lines on document] then rushed after him when I saw a negro when I took to be Barker standing as if prepared to [?] me, I approached him cautiously and [?] very close an object attracted my attention to the left lying in the ground, which when I looked for a moment, proved to be a man lying with blood on his [?]. The explosion was immediately after I saw Barker raise his arm as if he were going to strike. He seeme to be very much infuriated. [A second page of doctors testimony reads as follows:] Testimony taken at the inquest held over the body of George Barker deceased. Testimony of Dr. Aiken. I have examined the body of Mr George Barker, and find that he came to his death by a pistol ball passing through his right Lung. He received only two pistol shots. I am convinced from the direction which the ball took that Barker was shot at some little distance. The outer [?] of the skull was broken but the blow was not sufficient to Kill him or to produce conpression of the brain. [A second Dr. Madden agrees with this assessment]
