I did not know them only know then were Burrs a man and a woman. I caught up with them, I saw D. P. Douglass with one of two guns in his hands I don't know who shot the man but Brown said we had it to do it to do. I went to the place of the occurrence on the next morning (Sunday). I saw some gun wadding, I saw some shelles in some leaves. I saw around a large pine about 20 ft. from the road sign as if some one had been standing around it pushing the stram, it was trampled around a person could conceal themselves behind that pine. The smoke of the gun was right about apposited the pines. I heard no one speak before the shooting I could have heard any one hollered if they had hollered loud. I saw one or two guns. I think two, no one in the buggy with the shot man except Smin mire Chapman and Brown were foot. I saw no buggy except the shot man was in. I could see from where I was to the buggy, I saw no one in the road, the smoke looked as if it came from the side of the road, I saw no one between me and the smoke in the road. I though the man was dead when I saw him. I saw no weapon about him C. H. Parkes
Caroline Hildreth being sown says . . . I was in the road leading to Wadesboro, with my brother Henry -- We met a man driving a gray horse just the other side of a drain of a branch the other side of Jackson road. He was just trotting along, I did not know him. He wore a little black cap. He seemed to be sober he was whistling. After he had passed me in about 50 or 60 yds. I heard some one say whoa, and a gun fire. I looked back and saw the smoke, and the man fall over to one side. The gun fired from the left side of the road, going towards Wadesboro. I saw several men come out of the woods after the gun fired toward the buggy
C. H. Parker being sworn says. I was going home . . . on the Wadesboro road and heard a gun fire in front of me. . . I raised by head and saw the smoke of the gun when the smoke vanished I saw a house head. I then saw Dr. J. H. Chapman, he was coming up the hill toward me in a little trot another man a little behind him also running, I said you killed him or shot him and Brown said "we heard it to do," I saw W. P. Swinnie sanding on the hind axel of the buggy. I saw a man in the buggy with his head lying over on his left shoulder, with blood running from his head and face . . .
