I turned back and found him - he as not dead I recognized him as James Thomas I said "Lord have mercy" after which Peter Curry asked him "Jim do you know who shot you?" Jim says "Yes I know very well who shot me Tom Lanier shot me." ... Don't know of his having any quarrel with any one except Amy his old wife. Amy and Jim had frequent difficulties and she told him that if he married Tillie Talbert he would be killed, his life would be shortened (she said a certain man told her if he married Tillie Tolbert he would be killed).
