Eliza Smith freedwoman being sworn saith that about one hour in the night last night there came two white men to her house and come in and thinks was and other outside of the house. The two that come in one was a tall rather midling aged man had light hair the other one was a young man with dark hair rather on the chunky order both had on dark cloths when they first come to the door they ask who lived here I told them Nelson and they said what Nelson I said Nelson Smith they then said is not this Lewis house she told them no that Lewis worked at the steam mill about this time Nelson woke Nelson told them he could show them Lewis house before he got off his bed they then said get up and put on your cloths for you've got to go and show where Lewis house Nelson got up off his bed they then called for a line he told them there was no line but he would go and show them the house without being tied when Nelson had got out of the house they said boy don't you run I don't want to hurt you they then were all out in the yard and they ask Nelson whose house that was near by Nelson told them Generals[?] they then said good night and then she heard the fireing of the pistols about four times after the fireing she went out and found her husband lying dead about two steps from the door
