Camden, S.C. Feb. 28th 1870

Yesterday (Sunday, Feb. 27th) Mr. James R. Holland came to Mr. James Dunlap's residence for me to go down and see Mr. John Player, stating that he was bleeding a great deal from a wound he had received the night before. I think it was between 2 and 3 o'clock P.M. when I went down, and found considerable hemorrhage going on from a small wound just over the left eye. I attempted to arrest the hemorrhage by compression, but failing in this, I succeeded in doing so by the application of persulphate of iron. I then left him with instructions that if the hemorrrhage was renewed to send for me immediately. About dark I received a message that the bleeding had commenced afresh, and on returning found that it was only his nose and not the wound that was bleeding. Patient said he was in great pain and asked me to give him something to relieve him. I gave him half grain of morphine, and again left him, renewing my directions that if the hemorrhage should begin again in the night to notify me immediately. Did not hear from him through the night. Went down this morning and found extensive oedema of the face and neck with labored and stertorous breathing. Seeing that his condition was very critical I at once asked for a consultation. Dr.'s Deas and Baruch both met me in consultation, and we all agreed that nothing could be done for his relief as his condition was hopeless. He died about 11 o'clock this morning from Oedema of the Glottis. I do not [?] wound was inflicted [?] but was probably caused by his falling down while in a state of intoxication. A. A. Moore, M.D.
