N.H. Huggins sworn. All I know about the death of the boy Summer is that he came to my kitchen about day break in a state of delirium. He was bleeding very freely from the nose having received a severe wound across the face below the brow of the eyes in the course of the day. He came to himself & stated that the boy Mnroe belonging to T.L. Boykin had threatened him if he idd not stay from that place he would do him some harm. The boy Summer when he came to my kitchen was stripped of all his clothing except pants & shirt, the balance of his clothing were afterwards found in an old well [?] of some person at the spot where the Boy Summer received the wound. He seemed to have been struck by some persons [?]ding behind a tree. I think the track corresponded with the truck [track] of the Boy Monroe. The truck was [?] as I understood Summer the Saturday night previous to his being wounded from the truck described above led from the director of the [?] where the Boy Monroe lived & the same truck returned that way & came no further the tree where the Boy received the wound. I believe the Boy George belonging to T.L. Boykin will be an essential witness in the further investigation of the case. George is now absent on the coast.... N.H. Huggins.

Rose a slave of T.L. Boykin called and says the Boy Summer was at my house the night before the morning he received his wound. He left my house between 3 & 4 o'clock A.M. Summer & myself were engaged to be married. I was not aware of any difficulty between Sommer & Monroe on my account. The day before the wound was inflicted he, Monroe, said, while working in the potato patch "yes, you & Sommer are to be married but if you don't mind before Christmas you or Summer will be in hell."

Georgianna, a slave belonging to the Est. of Burwell Boykin, called. Says she lives about half way between the Est. place of T.L. Boykin. I saw Monroe about one hour before day on the morning that Summer was wounded. Saw the boy Monroe about twenty yards from the tree where the Boy Summer was wounded. I heard a noise half an hour before but I thought it was a calf bellowing. He, Monroe, had a stick in his hand going towards his house, walking very fast, putting his stick to the ground as he walked. On Sunday when he, Summer, could talk he said Monroe was the one who struck him. I never saw him pass so early before. I am certain Monroe was the man I saw near the tree & I believe he was the one who struck Summer. I am no kin to Summer....
