Stephen Berry, author, is Gregory Professor of the Civil War Era, Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Historical Association, and Co-Director, with Claudio Saunt, of the Center for Virtual History, all at the University of Georgia. The author or editor of four books on the South in the Civil War Era, he has always felt compelled to study "old, unhappy, far-off things."
