Chief Simms Sworn Say -- Happened on old No 1 highway 2 -- miles South of Cheraw near Thompson Crook Bridge. Saturday afternoon or night. . . Between 10 & 10:30 Sat night Walker Murry came to me said Hank Negro or Heart Negro lying side of road by Thompson Creek. . . saw man lying on ace in drain near road head on back left hand under boy had about 22 or 24 ft this side of him was little over -- pt. whiskey, hat, & torn sack look at him found he was white man but didn't turn him around that time. Just him found he was dead & cold at that time . . . wound look like they had been done by ragged or jagged Instrument I think it possible that mule shoe could have caused wounds. Signs show he lived some time after wound were inflicted.
