Also James Grimes a Bound Boy to Mr. Stephens Being sworn on oath sayeth, that on Monday the 18th of March last, that Mr. Stephens in anger Beat his wife with a waggon Whip, for about half an hour, Sometimes turning the Butt & striking her on the head, and left him beating her, at dinner time he swore that he wished she was dead and in hell, and that he has never been friendly with her since he has lived with him, and for about a year he has been very abuseful, often abusing & beating her, both drunk & sober, that he has known him to beat her till she could not stand, and running her off & keeping her out of nights, & that he has many times heard him say he would take her life, that he had often seen him kick her out at the door, & that he believe that Mrs. Stephens was getting in a better state of health, until she was beaten with the whip, and since that time she has been getting worse, and that he believes days was shortened in consquence of the abuse she recd. from him.
