Physicians Report. Jany 22 1863 We have examined the dead body of Bookey a Slave property of R. G. W. Grissettt and find on external examination that the legs the thighs Buttocks and Back were severely Brusied ad on the right thigh posterurly a severe contused wound and echymosis. on the breast was observed several echymoised points. On the Crown of the head we found a wound laying open the scalp to the bone on laying open the bdomen the several organs were carefully examined the intestinal tract was Very much congested as also the merentua They Kidney on the left side was much inflamed as well as congested and a point observed which would terminate in an abscess. The Bladder was examined and occupied its normal position & color much enlargment of the livery from congestion The lungs examined & foundmuch Congested. The Heart examined and two points observed indicating inflamatory action by deposit of lymph from the appearances are of Opinion that death was induced by severe flogging or beating Respecfully forwarded J H. R. G. W. Grissett Sworn. Know Boy Bookey he belonged to witness Hardy brought Booky Home on the 15.th inst. Witness took boy upstairs and Examined him witness then whipped boy gave him about 100 lashes Hardy then whipped him gave him about 20 lashes & started to Jail with the Boy, Witness did not see him till the Sunday following Mr Hardy wrote to me that the boy got away from him going to Jail I and H. Hardy are copartners in the manufacture of Salt, boy Bookey was under control of Hardy at the time from the appearance of the Boy & statement of Hardy I was not satisfied. I did not think the Boy whipped enough I whipped him gave him about 100 lashes Hardy then gave him about 20 with my approval. On Wednesday morning the 21.st inst I called D.r Grant to his assistance finding the Boy needed medical treatment the boy died about 3 oclock the same Evening I & Hardy whipped the boy with a leather strap. Thursday night after boy got away was a rainey & cold night Friday rainey I suppose the boy had taken the weather on those two nights--Sworn this 26 day of January 1863 at Conwayboro Horry District--R G W Grissett

Murphey Hughes Sworn Knows Boy Bookey was whipped on the 15 or 16 of January By M.r H Hardy on one of these days Hardy Came to Witness's Camp and hasked him to help tie Bookey--Hardy took hold of Bookey round the waist and arms Bookey had a Knife out, Bookey said if you dont let me loose I will cut them I let him loose I was afraid he would cut me, McLeod came to our assistance took hold of him and told him to give up the Knife he would not, Witness then took hold of Bookey round the waist& threw him down, McLeod then tried to wring the Knife out of his hands and broke the blade out, Hardy was holding the boy round the waist, Hardy told teh boy to cross his hands three times he did not, Hardy stripped off and caugth up a Stick I suppose about an Inch through & 20 inches long & struck the boy 3 licks Hardy then tied him and whipped him with a Buggy trace & I suppose struck him about 100 licks principally around the thighs Witness then whipped him. gave him about 25 or 30 licks Boy standing on his feet. Hardy then paddled him with a pine paddle made for the use of taking up Salt mostly on thighs and rump paddly about 1/2 inch thick about 14 inches long. Hardy then took the boy in Buggy and went away witness struck Boy with trace on left side Sworn to this 26 day of January 1863 at Conwayboro Horry District M. Hughes
