Dafney Pearson Sworn Says that on the night of 21st Nov 1884 Annie Coleman came to my house and left her baby with me to keep while she went to a frolick near by some time after Annie left she witness got the baby to sleep & put it to bed then went to my sons house about 20 steps off closed door by pulling steeple out & putting over the hoop [?] the steeple was easily drawn. left very little fire in the fire place. Started back with a light but it went out before she got there, went on without a light to get some meal for bed [?] took about an hour. Some man called to me and said your house is on fire went out front of the house on fire and a man standing in the yard begged him to push the door open and save the baby he said he could not. she pushed the door open got her water bucket & threw the water on the fire beged [sic] this man to get the baby but he refused. the baby was still crying did not recognize the man at the time was so excited, but found after ward, it was Elias Pitman [?] the child was taken out... before the house was burned down but the child was nearly burned up, the deceased was a girl about ten months old named Lizzie Coleman. Witness sasys the man was standing close to the door gave her no assistance what ever...
