Elleck Hopkins Sworn Says - On yesterday the 1st day Fenruary 1884, between 3&5 Oclock P.M. I steped [sic] out the mill, to deliver Mr Deckert a sack meal, the engine exploded, and strange to say I did not hear the report the first intimation I saw of it was Dave Brown lying in the ditch at the Mill house. I pulled him out, he then told me he was blown up, he was bleeding from injuries received, I saw the dust caused by this explosion of the Engine. When I saw the destruction, I did not look for Calvin feeling confident he was dead, which proved to be so. I looked about the ruins for Calvin, he being the foreman at the engine, lying on the ground, his head between two trees, deceased was terably [sic] mangled the top of his head was nearly torn off. I called Jule Fall, to help me move him.
