R.J. Gladney Says that on [?] Feb 187[?] there was a man bured on his place[?] said to be Charles Jones and a short time after he was burried I heard that his face was all scarred and I concluded that I would have him raised. I heard that the family with whom he lived would not let any man[?] see him until he was dressed, these reports were general and I thought it propper to notify a coriner. I was advised to do this by my friend. Charles Jones the deseased lived on Mr. James Turners place about three miles from where he was berried. Be lived with John [?]. Catherine Hill being Sworn Says She was at [?] [?] on Mr Gladney's place on Sunday the the 2nd[?] [?] of Feb 1879. Charles Jones was buried on afsaid[?] Sunday evening says the coffin was opened at the ground[?] & that she looked at the corpse & recognized him to be Charles Jones & that Dec'd face looked like it have scabs or blisters on it. Daniel Stephenson[?] Sworn Says that he was at a [burning or burying?] at Mr R. G.[?] Gladneys place on Sunday evening the [?] day of Feb 1879 Saw the Coffin opened looked at the Decd face recognized the Decd to be Charles Jones and that his face looked like it was bruised all so saw one or two scars. Witness says he mentioned it to several persons and allso told Mr. J. J. Gladnesy about how the Decd face looked. Witness says that Charles Jones the Decd was living with one John Martin who lives on Mr Turners[?] plantation about three miles from Where he (Decd) was buried. Witness says he did not take Charles Jones, Decd, to have good sence. Says the rumors about how Charles Jones Decd face[?] appeared[?] was the [?] [?] after he was buried. Rubin Washington [has similar testimony but adds] that he drove the wagon that brought the Decd to the grave and that he thought it strange that [?] John Martin or any of his family come with the corpos to the graveyard to see [?] Charles buried. Perry [?] Sworn Says that he lives about a half mile from where John Martin lives & that Charles Jones (the Decd) had been living with the aforesaid Martin for some time Says that Charles Jones had been sick about one month confined to the house. Witness says he was at John Martins several times last year & was there one time since Charles's, Deceased, sickness, Witness Says that he never saw any thing wrong, on his visits last year between Martin and the Decd only that he had scarcely any no clothes[?] but on his visit since Charles sickness which was about two weeks before he died he found him sitting in Marin's house by the fire apparently verry sick & Verry raged[?] [?] any clothes on Witness asked Charles Why he did not take medicine he said he did not like it. Martins Wife said she tried to get medicine in him but he would not take it. Witness says the Decd had no bedding[?] at all just sit around the fire all the time. Witness told decd he ought to lay down & he decd said he had no place to lay. Witness says he decd had no care taken of him, thinks his death[?] resulted from the want of attention, Says that John Martin had beds for himself & family & seemed to have plenty about him. Martin & his own family generally wore [?] good clothes and that Charles (the decd) had been living with said Martin all last year and he never saw him but what he was nearly naked. Witness says there was no doctor sent for at all for Charles. John Martin Sworn Says that he lives on Mr [?] Turners plantation that on Saturday morning the 1st of Feb 1879 got up was sitting down by the fire and got up about daylight Charles Jones (the Decd) was there[?] laying by the fire on some bags & his Witness coat. he asked him how he felt decd made no answer Witness then went to mill to get some corn ground Witness was gone from home about two hours & a half when he got back he found Charles Jones dead & layed out in the floor never looked at him but his wife told him he was dead Witness then went to the store to get a shroud carried the cloth home & went off again to get plank to make a coffin & did not get back until after night. never got the plank untill Sunday morning, made the coffin himself assisted by Jones[?] Oglesby. does not know who dressed him (decd) Caroline Moore[?] Sworn, Says She lives with John Martin & that he is her step Father. Says that on [?]day night when she went to bed Charles Jones (the decd) was as well common[?] or seemed to be Says she got up about sun up & that hour & half by sun Charles died. Witness Says that her Mother, Eliza Coleman washed and dressed the decd and that he (decd) was taken to the grave on Sunday the 2d of Feb 1879. Witness says she was sick and did not go to the burring. Witness [?] then states that her step Father Went to bed on Friday night & that she saw him in bed. Dr. T. G Douglas being Sworn Says he has made a post mortem examination of the body of Chas Jones two days after enterment and find no injuries of Sufficient Severity to produce death. The [?] on the forehead I find to be Superficial injuries The contussion on the [?] of Spine probably produced remaining in the [?] a great deal. I give as my opinion the deseased came to his death other[?] by [?] protracted illness or [?] [?]
