Peter Gadsden lived; at 11 o'clock P.M. Thursday Novr 20th 1873, William Johnson awoke me, to say that Peter Gadsden had been burnt up in his house. Peter Gadsden had an excellent character; he was a sober man, regular in his habits, he was a widower living alone in his house. Dr. Jno. D. Palmer, sowrn says; I have examined the remains, identified it as the body of a male, by the genital organs, in partial state of preservation. battering[?] to give further evidence, the flesh and bone, being charred, the arms and legs nearly all burnt off, skull crumbling under the touch. Ross Ford, sworn says: I saw Peter Gadsden after dark on the night of the burning, he was sober, came into her step-fathers house and asked for something cooked to eat, remained but a few moments, went out and down the row of cabins; never saw him again, saw his house on fire, heard Peter Gadsden say "Lord have mercy - went to the burning house about seventy five yards away. Georgianna Ford, sowrn says: I saw the house of Peter Gadsden on fire at the Chimney; fire was blazing through the top of house; when I arrived at the house the door was stuck and burning; Maloy[?] opened the window, about that time heard Gadsden's voice say "Lord have mercy" - the house was a one room frame building. Emma Stewart, sworn says: Peter Gadsden came to her mothers house, after dark, the night of the burning, asked for something to eat, was sober, he had been picking cotton that day, Thursday 20th Novr 1873, had some cotton in his house.
