Evidence given by Elizabeth Walling, Wm Simpson, James Walling, and Signa Simpson, to a Jury of inquest at the House of James Wolling Sept Sixth 1827 J Marshall Coroner Examination of Mrs Walling before [?] a jury of Inquest over the Body of an Infant held at the House of James Walling in the District of Fairfield and State of South Carolina 6th Sept 1827 Sworn Says From her view of the Woman (Miss Littitia Vaughn) Witness thought her to be in a family way that on Monday night last She (Miss Vaughn) got up from Bed and went out and did not return until Tuesday 12 Oclock and then there was an alteration[?] in her appearance. She then took some clothes and went off. Witness saw her yesterday and was confirmed in her opinion on tuesday she Miss Vaughn was asked where she had been and answer twas nobodys Business Elizabeth Wolling William Simpson Sworn Says Ms. Vaugh appeared to be in a family way he thought her not so far advanced, he saw her about three weeks ago. William Simpson ------------- James Walling Sworn Says, Some time ago he asked [?] Vaugh if she was in Family way, but was answered with the words, you'll see, witness and wife became convinced she was in Family Way. Witness thought she tried to conceal her shapes, on Saturday last she came to Wits House and on Monday night a little before day she went out of the House in the morning Wits and Family became alarmed and with some Neighboures commenced a search, on witness return to the House, was told that Miss Vaugh had been there, but was gone, Witness went after her and found her, was for securing her she denied the charge, Wit saw some signs of guilt where she had been sitting, she came to Wits House and took clothes, Wits was threatened by her with prosecution, She went with Wits that evening to the House of her Brother, next Morning Wits went to her Brother House but was again threatened, and returned home, Wits then went to search for what would lead to a proof and found the object that was shown to the jury of inquest, Wits thinks the Child was destroyed but is not able to say whether it was a premature birth or not James Walling --------- Mrs Simpson sworn says she asked Miss Vaugh if she was if she was in a family way but she denied it, Wits had a suspicion that she was, sometimes and sometimes not, she staid near four weeks at the house of Witness, Witness thinks that it was not a premature birth
