Evidence adduced and taken by a Jury of Inquest empanelled to inquire into the death of John Rowland on Monday 22 August AD 1825. William Brown, sworn saith on his oath, that he understood from Mr John Rowland the deceased that he was Stabd with a knife in two different places, by John Brown on or about the 4th day of June last. has seen wound, on the deceased which he Stated were inflicted by said Brown. Thinks that one of the wounds Shown him by the deceased was in the Left Side, and the other below the navel. the wound in the Side being the largest, the largest about four inches in length and the smallest about two. Witness saw his bowels out at the largest wound or incision. deceased resided in this District, died on the night of the 19th instant. has been confined to his bed ever since the wounds were given as far as witness knows. William Brown Robert Bell Sworn Says on oath, that he saw Mr John Rowland the day on which he had received a wound or wounds in his body; Saw the deceased and his bowells gushing out. understood that John Brown inflicted those wounds; believe they were the cause of the death of the deceased. has been often to see him since he was wounded never knew of his being able to walk about; but seldom able to Sit[?] up in bed. the largest wound being in the left side of the belly he thinks three inches or more in length; and the smaller one, one inch or perhaps more. Robert Gill[?] James Rogers Sworn Says on oath, that he saw Mr. John Rowland within a few hours as he beleives, after he had received a dangerous wound or wounds; witness saw the deceased bowells out when the Physicians had placed him on the floor for the purpose of sewing up the wounds. Witness has heard Mr. Rowland and Mrs.[?] Bell Say that Some dispute had taken place between one or both of them and John Brown, who he thinks made some attempt of violence toward his sister or sisters as they stated to witness. Mr Rowland interfered as Stated to him by the women above named to prevent any violence. John Brown then drew his knife and inflicted on the deceased the wounds as before Stated. Witness States that on the day before this transaction took place he heard John Brown make some threats of violence against some person or person, having a knife drawn in his hand which he also repeated the next morning James Rogers Martha Bell Sworn says on her oath, that She was present when a wound or wounds were inflicted on the body of John Rowland deceased. Witness says that Mr. Rowland did not appear provoking in his conduct or conversation towards John Brown. Witness heard a dispute between John Brown and her sister Rowland and that Mr. Rowland came in as a mediator on this occasion. the wounds were inflicted by John Brown, witness saw no knife but saw his hand go twice toward Mr. Rowland, has reason to believe that the occurance on that affair was the cause of his death.
