First Witness: Sergeant Thomas Jack Welsh, duly sworn, testified as follows: Q. Are you home on leave? A. Yes. . . . Q. Where did the accident happen? A. On front of school house on Main Street in Chesterfield at the intersection road coming from the school and Main street highway. . . . I was coming down the road towards tow and this little girl came across the road toward the school house, looking toward town and I tried to stop and I hit the post trying to miss her. . . I saw her before she got out on the highway I thought she was going toward town. When I saw she was coming towards the road I put on brakes. . . Q. Was this child, Betty Lou Burch, running, walking or what? A. She was peddling a bicycle. . .
