FIRST WITNESS: Mr. Jim Parnell, duly sworn, testified as follows: . . . We came up the curve onto the straight road and saw the children. I told my daughter to stop and pick them up and she drove off the highway and stopped. They were on the left hand side of the road going from church in the same direction as we were. Just as we stopped I heard the car and say "Lordy, somebody's killed them!" I didn't know who it was but I got out as quickly as I could and she was out and to them as quick as I was. Her name was Miss. Thema Moore. . . She wanted to carry them to the hospital and she stayed with them the whole time and did everything she could
FOURTH WITNESS: Mrs. Letha Mae Moore, duly sworn, testified as follows:. . . About twenty or twenty-five miles per hour. The car started going faster and she couldn't stop it. We were going home from church on Highway #147 toward Hartsville
FIFTH WITNESS: Miss Thelma Moore, duly sworn, testified as follows: I'm in training at the McLeod Infirmary in Florence, South Carolina. . . I was leaving the Union Methodist Church going home. Q. DO you have a drivers' license? A. No, I never had taken the test and I was thinking of getting one and drove when going to church but I never drove in tow. A. How old are you? A. Twenty-one. . . After leaving church I was going around a turn and I noticed then that it got faster and I don't know, maybe I was mashing on the gas. I pumped the brakes and the clutch but couldn't do anything. Mr. Parnell was parked on the right side. I had my sister-in-law and her little baby with me. And there was a ditch on the edge and if I tuned that way it was so narrow that I couldn't possibly have passed without hitting them. So I went on the out side. Q. How far were you from them when you saw the car? A. Right after I got around the bend. I wasn't very far from them and the car was gaining speed and I couldn't get the brakes to work.
