J. W. Mathews sworn says Found him dead this AM between 4 & 5 oclock appeared to have been dead about 2 hours . . . was told Lucy couldnot wake Major went to call him & couldnot wake him & the the shook him & felt his pulse and saw he was dead. Lucy told him Major have been drinking night before saw him that night didnot notice any signs of drinking was told by Stephens Thomas that Major was drunk yesterday.
Dr. McLean says There is no evidence of violence about the body and from the witnesses don't think he was poisoned because in that case he would have been some indication such as vomiting . . .
