Clarissa had given the child laudanum & proceeded to administer an emetic, with a view of dislodging it from the stomach found it very difficult to execute vomiting succeeded after some length of time, found great difficulty, in keeping the child from falling asleep, in fact, it appeared in a perfect stupor so that finally, we found it impossible to prevent a deep sleep ... returned and found the child in convulsions which continued at intervals until about 11 Oclock at night, when it expired

on Monday sent for my sister and requested her to prescribe some thing for my child, she sent me a small phial of Laudanum, and directed that the babe should have one drop with twenty five drops of Rhubarb

While conversing with Mr Hard[?] near the fire place, heard some little noise in the Room went in and my little daughter remarked, that there is Clarissa with the babe in her arms after you had forbid her to take it up when it was asleep, the girl Clarissa remarked she had only taken it up to look at it, I then observed the child make a little noise like strangling caught in my arms and smelt laudanum, and saw a drop on its lip, when tasting found it beyond a doubt laudanum ... on feeling for the phial of Laudanum, where I had before placed it, found it was not there. I then asked Clarissa to tell me what she had done with the bottle of laudanum, and Replied she had not seen it, and knew nothing of it, I then told her if my babe died she would be hung ... I then went to Clarissa and begged her to tell me if she had not had the laudanum she stood for a few moments and Replied yes, that she had taken it and used a part of the laudanum to put on her toe, where she had stumped it, and that she had afterwards taken up the babe, and a drop might have gotten on its lips, I then examined and found she had no sore on the toe and that no laudanum had been applied to her foot

if the child should die, she (the girl) would be hung, she replied very coolly, that she was either willing or could be hung, the whole manner of the girl seemed quite cool and undisturbed, until the phial was found when she burst into tears and seemed much confused

C> Hard[?] examined says that on Friday morning while Clarissa was locked up in the corn house in Mr Hards yard she (Clarissa) called for something, she went to her after having a good deal of conversation with her asked her what made her give the babe Laudanum, she at first said she did not but finally said she did, and that she had given it twice and about four drops each time that she done it because she was mad with Mrs Aldrich and had no other way to get Revenge on her.
