J. R. Patrick being duly sworn says. Returning from work to dinner yesterday 28th noticed some buzzards on the ground in the rear of the house. went into the house and asked Mary Jane Finlay who was dead as I noticed some buzzards on the ground. she [?] that she supposed that it was a yellow cat that John and Willie Finlay had killed I then went to see what was dead and found ten buzzards near the house about 10 feet from the rest pulling at a string. I then went further to where the rest of the buzzards and saw what appeared to me to be entrails of a beef, and after examing it carefully found the leg and arm of a child lying on the ground naked. The buzzards had picked out a hole in the breast of the child. I have not noticed any woman in the neighborhood whom I think to be in condition to give birth to a child. After eating dinner I went by the house of a colored woman and called her out and told her of finding the child with buzzards plucking at it and told her to cover it up. she said she would. Dr. Russell beying duly sworn says: I went to the place where the child was exhumed & found a male child. It had received no attention at its birth. The cord & after birth being all attached to the child. The child was covered with dirt. On being washed the outer skin peeled off making the impression on my mind that it had been dead for some time. I found the right arm adhering to the body only by a little skin. A large opening rather on the right side of the breast. I found the lings removed from the chest. The outer skin peeing off that way I could not determine as to its color. I presumed that it is a colored child. The lungs being removed I am deprived of determining whether the child was dead or alive at its birth. I presume that it is a colored child from the color of the detached cuticle. I could not say how long the child had been dead. still my presumption is that it had been dead for some time. Wm. T.
