Willie A. Anderson sworn says: On last Saturday morning, March 22d 1884 there was a fire at Woodruff in Spartanburg County, S.C. It was thought to be the work of an incendiary. The store of Jno. W. Martin was burned and signs of its having been first robbed. Myself and others went out searching for the goods and the incendiary. Suspicion fell upon James Brooks and we were hunting for him. On Wednesday evening, Mar. 26th, I saw him in the Old Charleston Road leading from Spartanburg to Laurens. I told him to halt. He ran off up the Creek (Ferguson Creek). I purused about two hundred yards. He ran to the creek. When he reached it I was thirty or forty yards behind him. He jumped into the Creek. I did not see him any more.... W. A. Anderson
