W.M. Watson sworn. Keeps the Camden Hotel. Says about a quarter past one o'clock Peter Beauford came up to the door, was whipped by me the other day in the piazza for using vulgar language and requested him not to come about the Hotel any more unless he could behave himself. To day he stopped before the door about one o'clock on horseback and called me and asked me if I had another stick in the house. I told him I had not and was very sorry I had to use the one I had the other day. Beauford told me if I was put put my head over the other side of the bridge he would take a stick and see if my head was as hard as his. I told him I had not hurt him much and the first time I came over the river I would stop and take dinner with him. John Lee Dixon was about thirty feet off coming as I supposed to dinner, being about the usual hour. When Dixon came up he passed me on the right on the pavement and put his hat on the edge[?] of the piazza floor from when he walked towards Beauford and in passing drew a knife from his bosom and stepping up to Beauford said if you have any thing against Mr. Watson get down and whip him now. When I heard that I thought he was in earnest and approaching him caught hold of his arm and assured him that Mr. Beauford was only joking. There were several gentlemen sitting in the piassa. He Dixon turned to hem and said if any one else had any thing against me to hame. I told him there had been no quarreling here, and no body had any thing against me, and I told him to put up his knife. J.J. Davis came out and asked him to put up his knife. I told Davis to go back as I could manage Dixon. I had him Dixon by one arm all this time. William J. Graham then came up with his stick in his hand (which the witness produced) and said to Dixon put up that knife. Dixon then had his knife in his right hand, so that witness could not reach it. Dixon said to Graham "stand back" or "I'll kill you or slay you." Graham said he was not afraid and would not stand back and raised his stick with one hand and reached out [with] the other, at which time Dixon stabbed Graham with the knife in the left breast once. I then jerked him away and turned him clear round. He raised the knife again and said to witness I would not stick you and dropped his hands. He would not give me the knife but placing it in the sheath put it [in] his bosom or pocket. I then reeled him. I then called to John J. Davis to take hold of Graham that he was stabbed and take him into the house. Before Davis could get into the house Dixon drew a pistol apparently from his coat pocket and pointed it at Graham and Davis, the latter was at the time between Graham & Dixon. I undertook to knock the pistol from his hand but failed to do so. I then twisted his body around, the pistol went off, the ball going into the street. Davis brought Graham into the house and the latter sunk down on the floor and expired in ten or fifteen minutes after he got into the house. Dixon then got on the edge of the piazza and fired his pistol through the trees. I stepped up to him again and taking hold of him said, you have killed Mr. Graham. Dixon said, "Do you think so?" and he asked me what he could do? I told him I did not know what he could do without he could outrun the law. Knows of no ill feeling or malice between the parties previous to this occurrence. Believes that both Dixon and Graham had been drinking and were more or less intoxicated.

H. Holleyman sworn. I was coming down the stairs of the Camden Hotel between the hour of one and two o'clock this day, and as I turned the corner of the last flight I heard the report of a pistol... When I got below the stable, Dixon came running after me and explained Capt. Holleyman I want to speak to you. I asked him what was the matter. He said I am crazy. I replied I don't wish to speak with you sir. Knows of no malice or ill feeling between the parties previous to this occurrence. Dixon once lived with me and is of a very vehement disposition. Once shot at a man while he lived with me and for which I discharged him. Otherwise he is of an amiable and obliging disposition.
