James Darton sworn says that He was at work near the river and heard the boys talking and then went to them they told him they had found a man in the river we went in the river and ran a stick under him and raised him out of the water and saw it was a man he had on boots. He then came out but went back again with John Willard and Mr Peterson we got it up we saw there was a rock tide [sic] to him with a lether [sic] strap we brought him on the Laurens side of the river... his head and arms were missing it seemed to be very roton [sic] there was a cotton rope tied a round his thighs just above the knees. He thinks the body was the body of a colored man the clothes on him was roton [sic]...
