James M. Thompson sworn say I went to my [???] at 12 oclock las night. I smelt something . . . Will Thorp told me that his dogs had found a baby under my door steps. . . . I have smelt scents before. My dog is a pointer. There have been a good many get water at my well . . . I have a colored women cook work man workman. The women lives in the country stay at my house at night only leave with me one week. Slept in room burning stove . . . her name is Mary Murphy. Child did not seem to be decomposed much. It looked dark red when I first saw it. . . There was a hoe under the steps as if it had been cover up with dust. The plank was nailed on steps. Saw no trail about the steps . . .
Lucy Reid being sworn says I live in front of Mr. Thompson. I am not married. I have no children. I have been sick lately. I am not sick now . . . I was not sick last week. I have been washng for Mrs. Barch I did not wash for her the last week
H. R. Barch being sworn says Lucy Reid had been washing for me. She did not wash last week she did state her reason. She never have seamed to me to be in family way. Have been complaining of being [??] for two or three weeks. I have not heard that she was expected to be confined
Joe Reid being sworn says I know Lucy Reid. She is my daughter. She has not been in family was or confined. I do not know anything about the dead child.
Mary Reid being sworn says. I know Lucy Reid. She is my sister. I live in the same home as her. She has not ben in family way or confined lately. I dont know anything about the deed child
D. F. Teal MD sworn say -- I have made a physical examination on Lucy Reid and testify that she has not given birth to a child anytime recently. I have examined the dead body . . . it was a negro child. It was in a state o decomposition to such extent that I could not tell as to any foul play. . . it was likely born dead or lived but a short time after birth . . .
