I then struck him two licks with an axe. I then kept striking at him with the axe and he cutting at me with the knife, I then fell out at the door & he followed me. I then got hold of a hoe & struck him two licks. I then got hold of the axe and struck him again.

Gray on the night of 22nd June 1876 in self-defense in her own house and yard with several wounds with a mortal wound inflicted with ^the edge of^ an axe upon the top of the head to length of 3 inches severing in the skull bone.
